Talk : Tao of Trauma: An East-meets-West Approach to Restoring Balance for Survivors of Traumatic Stress

Abstract

Trauma disrupts the body's capacity for coherence causing disruption in Qi flow, autonomic
nervous system dysregulation, and contributing to imbalances between body, mind, and spirit.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has long understood how emotions impact the health and
well-being of our life force.
Contemporary Western trauma science including Self-Protective Response and Polyvagal
Theory, offers complementary frameworks for understanding how the body holds and heals
stored trauma.
This presentation is an introduction to Tao of Trauma, as an east-meets-west approach to
restoring coherence for trauma survivors. This framework, created by Alaine Duncan and Kathy
Kain, bridges the Five Elements of Chinese Medicine with the Self-Protective Response and
approach to trauma resolution created by Peter Levine. This will be an exploration of the
neurobiology of traumatic stress, somatic principles and how we can restore coherence after
experiences of trauma. Tao of Trauma provides a nuanced, precise way of supporting our
communities that have experienced traumatic stress and related health conditions.
Attendees will gain a working understanding of the Tao of Trauma model, including: the
correspondence between the Five Elements, Self-Protective Response, somatic principles
including 5 Elemental Qualities of Touch and applications in clinical practice.
