Talk : The Link Between the Oral Cavity and Systemic Health: An Integrative Perspective Through Biological Dentistry, Functional Medicine, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Naturopathy

Abstract

The oral cavity represents far more than the health of the teeth and gums. It is a critical interface between the external environment and the body's immune, neurological, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and metabolic systems. Increasing evidence demonstrates that chronic oral inflammation, infection, dysbiosis, and toxic burden may contribute to systemic inflammatory processes associated with cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disorders, neurodegenerative conditions, metabolic syndrome, and chronic illness.
This presentation explores the oral-systemic connection through the integrative lenses of Biological Dentistry, Functional Medicine, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Naturopathy. Particular attention will be given to the role of oral inflammation, hidden dental infections, jawbone pathology, and heavy metal exposure as contributors to whole-body dysfunction and chronic disease.
The presentation will further examine the tongue as both a diagnostic and functional organ, drawing from traditional healing systems and modern science. Relationships between craniofacial development, tongue posture, jaw growth, airway health, nasal breathing, nitric oxide production, sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnoea, metabolic syndrome, cognitive development, attention disorders, learning capacity, and quality of life will be discussed. The interconnectedness of the jaws with spinal alignment, pelvic stability, and overall structural health will also be explored.
By integrating contemporary research with traditional medical wisdom, this presentation proposes a comprehensive model of health in which the oral cavity serves as a key determinant of systemic wellbeing. It highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in identifying root causes of disease and advancing truly preventive, patient-centred healthcare.
